The X3 provides easy control of game statistics and timing through a simple keypad interface with two information displays. This guide explains how to use each button and interpret the display screens.
Use the Up and Down arrow buttons to navigate through menu options. Press Enter to select the highlighted option, or Back to return to the previous screen.
To enter a number (e.g., player number):
- Use the keypad: buttons 1-9 for digits, center bottom button for 0
- The cursor shows the current digit position
- Press Enter to confirm
- Press Back to cancel
First, it's important to familiarize yourself with the operation of the buttons.
The text in the center of a button indicates a short press operation.
The text shaded at the bottom of a button indicates a long press (hold 3 seconds) operation.
Warning: When an event configured with multiple parent/child receivers is started via the One Controller mobile app, no X3 can join the active event. The One Controller mobile app does not currently support adding X3 serial IDs to existing events.
1. Power on the X3: Hold the ON/OFF button (bottom center) for 3 seconds. You will see the "NEVCO SPORTS ONE" splash screen.
2. Battery check: The X3 checks battery levels automatically; replace batteries if a low-battery warning appears.
3. First time connection: The X3 will attempt to connect automatically:
3a. Pre-programmed receiver: If your receiver's serial is pre-set, the X3 connects automatically and displays Connecting to: plus the serial number.
3b. Device Discovery: If no receiver is pre-programmed, the X3 scans for nearby receivers and displays Searching......
When the scan completes, arrow-key to your receiver and press Enter. If your receiver isn't listed, see Device Discovery in the User Manual.
4. Connecting to a different receiver: From the scoring screen, press Options.
Select Options → Main Receiver. The Main Receiver menu shows Device Discovery (scan) and Manual Entry (type serial).
a. Main Receiver → Device Discovery: press Enter to search, then arrow-key to your receiver and press Enter.
b. Main Receiver → Manual Entry: type the serial number with the keypad and press Enter.
5. Select your sport profile: If multiple profiles are available, arrow-key to your selection and press Enter.
You are now connected and ready to control your scoreboard!
After your X3 connects to its receiver, it requests the list of events available for the X3's sport.
- Multiple events available: Use the Up and Down arrows to highlight the event you want to control, then press Enter.
- Only one event available: The X3 starts the event automatically with no prompt.
- No events available: Every minute the X3 will attempt to obtain the event list from the receiver, but no event has been created on the receiver for the X3's configured sport.
If only one event is available and the event is ended from the One Controller mobile app, the X3 displays an Event Ended screen. This prevents the X3 from immediately re-starting the event the operator just ended.
When the event is over, hold the ON/OFF button (bottom center) for 3 seconds. Choose:
Leave the event: Your event continues; another device can connect to control the scoreboard.
End the event: The game ends; the scoreboard goes blank.
This is your default screen showing essential match information:
Top line: H (Home), the serve indicator (< when Home is serving), Home's games won in each set (up to 5 sets; current score: 6, 7, 5), and 27 seconds on the serve timer.
Bottom line: G (Guest), the serve indicator (< when Guest is serving), Guest's games won in each set (up to 5 sets; current score: 4, 6, 6), and the FAULT indicator shared for BOTH teams.
Serving player: A < beside H or G marks which player is currently serving (HOME).
The X3 keypad has 12 buttons arranged in a 3x4 grid. The top buttons are configured for tennis functions: the Home player's stats are on the left column, the Guest player's on the right, and the serve controls run down the center.
| Button # | Label | Primary (Short Press) | Secondary (3s Long Press) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | WINNER | Record a winner for the Home player | N/A |
| 2 | START | Start the serve timer | N/A |
| 3 | WINNER | Record a winner for the Guest player | N/A |
| 4 | ACE | Record an ace for the Home player | N/A |
| 5 | STOP RESET | Stop the serve timer | Reset the serve timer to its default |
| 6 | ACE | Record an ace for the Guest player | N/A |
| 7 | FAULT ERROR | Record a fault for the Home player | Record an error for the Home player |
| 8 | SERVE | Toggle the serving player (Home/Guest) | N/A |
| 9 | FAULT ERROR | Record a fault for the Guest player | Record an error for the Guest player |
| 10 | MORE UNDO | Open the More menu | Undo the last recorded action |
| 11 | OPTIONS ON/OFF | Open the Options menu | Turn the X3 ON/OFF |
| 12 | ENTER EDIT | Select a menu/setting or submit input | Open the Edit Statistics menu |
Note: Errors recorded from the X3 are counted as unforced errors. To disambiguate between forced and unforced errors, track statistics using the One Controller mobile app.
This controller has no operator-editable statistics. If you press and hold Enter on the main display to open the editing menu, the X3 displays a Nothing To Edit screen for about 2 seconds and then returns to the main display.
Press MORE on the main display to open the More menu.
Select More → Super Tiebreak to open the super-tiebreak screen. The bottom line shows whether super tiebreak is enabled (Super TB: Off or Super TB: On); press Enter to start it.
Warning: Once started, the super tiebreak cannot be deactivated.
To start an event, follow the steps in Connecting to Your Receiver.
- Actions are recorded to the proper team when you press WINNER or ACE for that team, or when the opponent commits a double fault or error.
- Add a winner for a team: press WINNER for that team.
- Add an ace for a team: press ACE for that team.
- Record a fault for a team: press FAULT for that team.
- Record an error for a team: press and hold ERROR for that team.
The X3 automatically advances game, set, and match scoring in accordance with tennis rules.
- A point is awarded to a team when it scores a WINNER or ACE, or when its opponent commits an error or double fault.
- A game is scored 0, 15, 30, 40, game, and must be won by two points. At 40-40, known as deuce (DC), the next point scores advantage (AD); winning the following point wins the game, while losing it returns the score to deuce.
- A set is won by the first team to win 6 games with a lead of at least two games.
- At 6-5, the leader must win a seventh game (7-5) to take the set.
- At 6-6, a tiebreak game decides the set.
- The tiebreak is scored in raw points (1, 2, 3, and so on) rather than 15/30/40.
- The first team to 7 points wins the tiebreak, and the set, provided it leads by two (for example, 7-5).
- If the tiebreak reaches 6-6, play continues until one team leads by two (8-6, 9-7, and so on).
- Winning the tiebreak awards the set, and play advances to the next set.
Serve timer: resets and begins counting up automatically after a WINNER, ACE, FAULT, or ERROR is recorded.
FAULT indicator: clears automatically when a WINNER, ACE, ERROR, or a second FAULT (double fault) is recorded.
If the X3 loses its connection to the receiver during an event (because the two are out of range, too close together, or subject to radio interference), the X3 automatically attempts to reconnect and displays Reconnecting... on the screen. No operator action is required; scoring resumes once the connection is restored.
The Nevco ONE handheld controller features an Options Menu for accessing device information and configuring system settings. This menu provides access to battery status, device configuration settings, and system details.
To access the Options Menu:
- Press the Options button (located at the center bottom) from any screen.
This option displays current battery level information with a visual battery indicator that illustrates the approximate remaining charge.
This screen enables you to monitor your device's battery status to prevent depletion during critical operations.
Note: The battery is also checked at startup and will display a warning when at or below 20%.
This option connects the X3 to a receiver, either by scanning for nearby receivers (Device Discovery) or by entering the receiver's serial number directly (Manual Entry).
Warning: When the X3 is in an active event and either Device Discovery or Manual Entry is selected, the X3 leaves the active event. The event keeps running on the receiver and the scoreboard stays on; leaving the event only disconnects this X3.
- Select Options → Main Receiver.
- Choose Main Receiver → Device Discovery or Main Receiver → Manual Entry using the arrow keys and press Enter.
You can press the MORE/BACK button at any point in this process to cancel Device Discovery or Manual Entry and return to auto-connecting to the target receiver serial ID.
Device Discovery scans for nearby receivers and lists up to 10 of them. The previously targeted receiver is included in the list, letting you reconnect without navigating back to the main display. The list also offers a Device Discovery entry to re-scan (useful when more than 10 receivers are in range or the desired receiver wasn't found) and a Manual Entry entry for convenience.
Note: Receivers running an event are not discoverable.
- With Device Discovery highlighted, press Enter to start the scan. The X3 displays
Searching.....while scanning. The scan takes approximately 40 seconds.
- When the scan completes, the X3 lists the receivers it discovered along with the previously targeted receiver, Device Discovery (to re-scan), and Manual Entry.
- Use the arrow keys to highlight your receiver and press Enter to connect.
Use Manual Entry when you know the receiver's serial number and want to connect directly without scanning.
Note: Do not enter leading zeros from the receiver's serial number label. For example, if the label reads061011, enter61011.
- With Manual Entry highlighted, press Enter. The X3 shows a numeric serial-entry prompt.
- Type the receiver's serial number using the keypad and press Enter.
- The X3 connects to the specified receiver.
If you enter 0 as the serial number, the X3 displays an invalid-entry screen.
This screen provides crucial device information:
Serial Number: The unique serial number of your controller.
Model: The model designation of your controller.
FW Ver: The firmware version running on the controller (for example, FW Ver: 1.0.2).
This information is often required when contacting technical support or identifying your specific device.
This screen offers contact information for Nevco technical support:
- Support Phone Number: 1-800-851-4040
Contact this number if you encounter unresolved issues with your device despite consulting the manual or configuration options.
This read-only screen shows the current state of the controller's 900 MHz radio. Press Back to return to the Options Menu.
The screen displays two values:
TX Power: The radio's transmit power level, in dBm. The controller supports four levels (14, 17, 20, and 23 dBm) and ships set to 14 dBm.
Radio FW: The firmware version reported by the radio module.
Note: The transmit power level is configured from the Nevco companion app over Bluetooth. When changed, the RF Status screen updates immediately (no restart required) and the new level is retained across power cycles.
The X3 supports firmware updates over Bluetooth using the Nevco companion application. Follow the companion app's instructions to perform an update.
- A device running the Nevco companion app with Bluetooth enabled
- The X3 powered on and within Bluetooth range
- The mobile device running the companion app has internet access
- Open the Nevco companion app and pair with your X3 over Bluetooth. The X3 advertises itself as nevco-<serial> (for example, nevco-061011). The serial number can be found in Options → About > Serial# on the X3, or on a label inside the battery cover.
- Start the update from the companion app. The X3 leaves any active event and displays the firmware-update screen until the transfer completes. The X3 then reboots automatically; the full transfer + reboot takes less than 5 minutes.
- After the X3 reboots, the companion app reconnects over Bluetooth to verify the update. While waiting for verification, the X3 displays a confirmation-waiting screen.
- If the update is successful, the companion app will alert you. Simply power on the X3 the next time you need to start or join an event.
If the update fails, the companion app will alert you. You may also see the timeout screen on the X3 after about 5 minutes; this means the companion app was unable to reconnect via Bluetooth to verify the update.
If an update attempt fails, close the companion app and retry.
Note: If the new firmware is not confirmed (because the transfer was aborted, the companion app disconnected, or verification failed), the X3 automatically rolls back to the previously installed firmware on its next boot. No manual recovery is required.
X3 will not connect to the receiver: Ensure the receiver is powered on and you are within 50–650 ft of the scoreboard.
No display on the X3: Ensure batteries have capacity. If so, remove and re-insert batteries to power cycle the unit.
Connection drops intermittently: Move closer to the receiver. Check for sources of wireless interference (other wireless devices, metal structures). Ensure batteries are not low; a low battery warning may indicate insufficient power for reliable wireless communication.
"No Events Available" displayed on screen: Using the One Controller app, create an event with the sport profile for the X3's sport.
Wrong data on scoreboard:
- Verify you are connected to the correct receiver (turn off and turn back on to see which receiver is being connected to).
- Confirm the correct sport profile is selected.
- Verify Scoreboard Model matches in the receiver's settings via One Controller.
