The MPCW7 is a wireless desktop scoreboard operator's controller designed for use with Nevco hockey and field hockey scoreboards.

It transmits on the 2.4 GHz band and provides complete control of all hockey-specific scoreboard functions, including score, period, game clock, penalty timers, shots on goal, goal saves, and goal lights.

The MPCW7 is a tabletop (desktop) unit — it sits at the scorer's table and is not handheld.

This form factor makes it well suited for arena and gymnasium scorer's tables where a stable, full-featured controller is preferred.

Upon first power-up, the MPCW7 is configured to operate with a 47xx scoreboard as a hockey control.

Please take a few minutes to study this manual and practice with the control before the game.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Nevco using the information below.

NOTE
NOTE: Some features on the keyboard overlay may not be included on the particular scoreboard model being operated.

A segment timer is used for pacing organized practices, as an interval horn, and for other practical timing uses.

A segment consists of a practice event (playbook time, running drills, breaks, etc.) that runs for a set period of time.

When the time expires, a new segment is entered and the activity changes.

The segment timer counts down from the programmed time to zero.

The MPCW7 segment timer function supports a maximum of 20 segments.

Three settings are available per segment: time, auto horn, and auto advance.

  • Auto Horn — Sounds the horn at the end of the segment time.
  • Auto Advance — When enabled, the next segment automatically begins counting when the current segment completes.

A segment timer project is a collection of up to 20 segments.

Segment timer projects can take time to set up; if a project will be used regularly, save it to a profile.

NOTE
TIP: The simplest segment timer project is an interval horn — a one-segment project with Auto Horn and Auto Advance both enabled. The segment cycles through the allotted time, sounds the horn, and immediately restarts. This is commonly used in little league hockey for on-ice shift changes.

Example: Set Segment 1 time to 1:00, Auto Horn ON, Auto Advance ON.

The horn will sound every minute.

To save a segment timer project, create the project and then save it using the Profiles option in the OPTIONS menu.

There are three options in the main segment timer menu:

  1. Enable — Enables or disables the segment timer function. Disabling also removes the segment timer display from the scoreboard.
  2. Display on Scoreboard — Toggles whether the segment timer displays on the scoreboard in place of standard main time.
  3. Edit Segment — Used to edit segments and create a segment timer project.

To Enter the Segment Timer Menu

  2. Press YES to toggle. Disp On Board * means the segment timer is displayed on the scoreboard.
NOTE

A Profile saves all current control settings so they can be recalled later.

The MPCW7 can store up to 100 profiles per sport.

Each profile saves the following settings:

Half / Period / QuarterMain Time OptionsCaption Settings
All Game Time StatsAux Time OptionsTeam Names
Main TimeTime Out OptionsHorn Settings
Stop TimeSwap Home and GuestWireless Settings
Scoreboard BrightnessSegment Timer OptionsScoreboard Model
NOTE
NOTE: It is recommended to keep good notes on profile numbers and their purposes. The Appendix of the original Nevco manual includes a Profile Chart worksheet for this purpose.

To Enter the Profiles Menu

  1. Press OPTIONS until the display reads Profiles >>.
  2. Press YES to enter the Profiles menu. The display reads Load Profile.
  3. Press OPTIONS to scroll through the available profile options: Load Profile, Save Profile, Default Lock.

Load Profile is the first option within the Profile Options menu.

To Load a Profile

  1. From the Profiles menu, the display reads Load Profile.
  2. Press YES. The display reads:
Profile(##):## ◄

(The profile number shown is the last profile loaded or saved.)

  1. If the displayed profile is the one required, press YES.

  4. Displays the sport name.
  5. Loads the scoreboard with the saved profile settings.

Save Profile is the second option within the Profile Options menu.

Set all desired settings before saving a profile.

NOTE
TIP: It is useful to press the New Game key to clear the board before making all option changes and then saving. If you do not blank the board first, your profile will be saved with the current time and score values, which will be recalled each time the profile is loaded. This can be intentional — for example, saving a profile with 8:00 on the clock for basketball, or saving a profile with fouls pre-set to 0 instead of blank.

To Save a Profile

  1. Set all applicable settings for the profile.
  2. From the Profiles menu, press OPTIONS until the display reads Save Profile.
  3. Press YES. The display reads:
Profile(##):## ◄

(The profile number shown is the last profile loaded or saved.)

  1. If this is the desired profile number to overwrite, press YES.
  2. If a different profile number is desired, enter the two-digit number.
    • For a single-digit number, enter the digit and press YES.
  3. The MPCW7 sounds its beeper while saving.
  4. After saving, press SCROLL PROFILES to verify. The display shows the saved profile name.

Correcting a Saved Profile

If a mistake is found in a saved profile's settings:

  1. Load the profile.
  2. Change the incorrect setting.
  3. Save the profile again to the same number.

Default Lock is the third option within the Profile Options menu.

A default profile for each sport is programmed at the factory for the scoreboard model.

The Default Lock prevents users from overwriting this factory default profile.

Each time the control is powered on, the Default Lock is automatically turned on.

NOTE
NOTE: To use a profile you have created (instead of the factory default), you must turn off the Default Lock before loading your profile.

Default Profile Numbers by Sport

SportDefault Profile #
Soccer88
Football89
Track90
Baseball / Softball91
Lacrosse92
Basketball93
Volleyball94
Wrestling95
Hockey / Field Hockey96
NOTE
IMPORTANT: To preserve the factory defaults and retain the ability to return the control to a known state, avoid overwriting the factory default profile numbers (88–96). Save your custom profiles to profile numbers 1–87.

To Turn Off the Default Lock

  1. From the Profiles menu, press OPTIONS until the display reads Default Lock*.
  2. Press YES to turn the Default Lock off. The display reads Default Lock (no asterisk = off).
NOTE
NOTE: The Default Lock automatically turns on again each time the control is powered on.

The Backup / Restore option is used at the factory to output the contents of the profile and wireless data.

This option is not intended for routine operator use.

The MPCW7 is a universal controller — to operate a different sport, change the overlay and select the sport profile.

To Change to a New Sport

  1. Place the desired sport overlay on the control.
  2. Press SCROLL PROFILES. The display reads ##-SPORT.
  3. Enter the sport name using the keyboard (letters are on the right side of each key; all sports are entered in all capital letters), OR continue pressing SCROLL PROFILES until the desired sport is displayed.
NOTE
NOTE: Once the control can distinguish the sport from the characters entered, it will auto-complete the rest of the name. If the wrong sport is entered, press NO/CANCEL and begin again.
  1. Press YES when the desired sport is displayed. The control changes to that sport.

To start a new game or load a new profile:

  1. Press SCROLL PROFILES. The display reads ##-PROFILE NAME.
  2. Enter the profile name using the keyboard, OR continue pressing SCROLL PROFILES until the desired profile is displayed.
  3. Press YES when the desired profile is displayed. The control loads that profile.
NOTE
NOTE: Scroll Profiles changes the MPCW7's input and output to operate with the settings of the selected profile. Profile settings are those of the last profile loaded or saved in that sport.

The MPCW7 communicates wirelessly with one or more receivers.

Each receiver connects to a scoreboard and translates the wireless signal from the control into scoreboard commands.

The MPCW7 can operate one or more selectable wireless receivers depending on operational requirements.

Receivers can be linked or unlinked on a game-by-game basis.

NOTE
NOTE: It is strongly recommended to save wireless settings in each profile used. Different wireless settings should be saved to different profiles.

The Wireless options in the OPTIONS menu allow you to:

  • Link Receiver — Toggle which stored receivers are active (linked) for the current operation.
  • Add Receiver — Register a new receiver to the MPCW7 by serial number and name.
  • Delete Receiver — Remove a receiver from the MPCW7's memory entirely.

To Enter the Wireless Menu

  1. Press OPTIONS until the display reads Wireless >>.
  2. Press YES. The display reads Link Receiver.

The MPCW7 stores any receivers it uses in memory.

If a new receiver is required (new scoreboard installation, maintenance, or a new component), add it to the MPCW7 first.

Have the receiver serial number ready — it is required to add a receiver.

To Add a Receiver

  1. From the Wireless menu (Link Receiver is displayed), press OPTIONS until Add Receiver is displayed.
  2. Press YES. The display reads Receiver# ◄.
  3. Enter the six-digit receiver serial number.
  4. The control navigates to the receiver naming screen. The display reads _ ▲.
  5. Enter a receiver name using the team name and letter keys.
NOTE
NOTE: Receiver names are entered the same way as team names (see Options Menu). It is recommended to name the receiver according to what it controls (e.g., ARENA 1).
  1. The display confirms the entered name (e.g., SOC FIELD 1 ▲).
NOTE
NOTE: Once a new receiver is added, it is added to all profiles as linked by default. If this is not desired, save each profile with the correct receiver link state for that profile.

The MPCW7 allows you to choose which wireless receivers to use during a given game or operation.

Receivers default to being linked; this setting allows toggling each receiver on or off.

NOTE
TIP: If the MPCW7 is used at a facility with multiple scoreboards (e.g., two arenas), save one profile per scoreboard configuration with only the relevant receiver linked in each profile.

To Link or Unlink Receivers

  1. If using profiles, load the desired profile first. Refer to Profiles.
  2. Press OPTIONS until the display reads Wireless >>, then press YES.
  3. The display reads Link Receiver.
  4. Press YES. The display reads the first receiver in the list (e.g., Rec Name 1 *).

An asterisk (*) next to the receiver name means the receiver is linked.

  1. Press YES to toggle the link state for that receiver (link or unlink).
  2. To link or unlink another receiver, press OPTIONS to cycle to the next receiver (e.g., Rec Name 2).
  3. Press YES to toggle the link state for that receiver.
  4. Repeat for all receivers as needed.
  5. If using profiles, save the current profile after setting the correct link states.
  6. Repeat steps 1 through 7 for all profiles with different wireless settings.

The scoreboard model setting must match the scoreboard being operated.

NOTE
IMPORTANT: The scoreboard model should be set before connecting to a scoreboard. It is highly recommended to create a profile to save this setting if the MPCW7 will be used to control multiple board models.

To Change the Scoreboard Model

  1. Press OPTIONS until the display reads Model >>.
  2. Press YES.
  3. Press OPTIONS until the desired scoreboard model series is displayed.
  4. Press YES to confirm.
NOTE
NOTE: Scoreboard model is also covered in the Profiles section (Profiles) because it is saved as part of each profile. Setting the model per profile is the recommended approach for facilities with multiple scoreboard types.

If a receiver is no longer in use, is defective, or needs to be replaced, delete it from the MPCW7.

WARNING
WARNING: Deleted receivers are removed from the control's memory for all profiles. If you only want to stop using a receiver for a particular game or profile, use the Link/Unlink function instead of Delete. To correct an accidentally deleted receiver, use the Add Receiver and Link Receiver procedures.

To Delete a Receiver

  1. From the Wireless menu, press OPTIONS until Delete Receiver is displayed.
  2. Press YES. The display reads the first receiver in the list (e.g., SOC FIELD 1 *).
  3. If this is not the receiver to delete, press OPTIONS until the desired receiver is displayed (e.g., SOC FIELD 4 *).
  4. Press YES to delete that receiver. The receiver is removed from the MPCW7 and all profiles.

For a new installation or first-time setup, complete the following steps in order:

  1. Power on the scoreboard / receiver first. Wait for the receiver indicator LED to illuminate.
  2. Power on the MPCW7 control.
  3. Set the scoreboard model: OPTIONS → Model >> → YES → select model → YES.
  4. Add the receiver: OPTIONS → Wireless >> → YES → OPTIONS → Add Receiver → YES → enter serial number and name.
  5. Verify the receiver is linked: OPTIONS → Wireless >> → YES → Link Receiver → YES → confirm asterisk is present.
  6. Create and save a profile with these settings. See Profiles.

A flat plastic panel that fits over and around the keys on the control.

Tabs at the top and bottom hold it in place.

Each overlay provides the proper labeling for each key, Nevco contact information, and the sport name.

To change sports, install the correct overlay and enter the sport name on the new sport screen.

Segment Timer

Sometimes called Practice Timer; allows a list of time segments to be programmed into the control.

When started, the first segment loads into the main timer and counts down.

When zero is reached, if Auto Horn is enabled the horn sounds for 4 seconds and the next segment loads.

If Auto Advance is enabled the next segment begins counting; if not, TIME ON must be pressed.

The Segment Timer has replaced the Interval Horn and can mimic it exactly.

Stop Time

A time set for main time or aux time to automatically cease counting.

Functionally acts the same as time running out on the clock.

The auto horn will sound if set to do so in main time options and horn options.

Tenth Second Shift Timer

Automatically shifts from displaying minutes and seconds to seconds and tenths of seconds during the last minute of countdown time.

May be disabled if desired.

Time Out Timer

Programmable for different time out lengths, with optional warning horn and optional display of time out time remaining on the scoreboard.

Five different time out timers are available.
